In
Memoriam
Jean Carmichael 1913 - 2006
Thank
you, everyone, for the heartfelt messages, cards and phone calls after
Jean's passing. She was lucid until the end, and her heart just
stopped as she was sleeping at 1:36 in the morning of 23 March.
John's
former sister-in-law, Mary Ann, visited Mother two days earlier at the
nursing home. Mother knew who she was and they were able to have
a conversation. Mary Ann's mother-in-law, Stella, and family friend, Donna, cared for Mother on alternate Sundays while Mother was
still at home. Thanks, Mary Ann.
There
were 80 at the Memorial Service on 13 May at St. Andrew's, Albany, followed by a reception in Carmichael Hall.
The
graveside service will be on Saturday 8 July at 1:00 pm at St.
Andrew's Presbyterian, 115 St. Andrew's Road, Scarborough,
Ontario. All are welcome. (416) 438-4100
Obituary
Wonderful 125th Anniversary
140 attended the
anniversary celebration of the Church of the Good Shepherd in August 2005.
It was the largest crowd in the history of St. Hubert's!
John brought Jean up for the
festivities. She was alert and greeted many friends by
name. Visitors were met by Noël who
led a tour around the island set up by Megan, beginning at the gazebo where parishioners
waited after services.
Sam Berliner III gave an illustrated
talk on the beginnings of the Marion River Carry Railroad, the
shortest standard gauge railroad in the world. This was followed
by trumpet "Fanfares and Flourishes" performed by Dennis Johnston,
professor at the College of St. Rose and Andrew Schwendeman, a student
at the Hartt School of Music.

All of this was filmed by John and Mary
Fik for their cable documentary, "Above the Blue Line,"
broadcast in January. The colors were beautiful, lots of shots
of the guideboat and everyone arriving at the dock and wading up onto
Flat Rock.

Photos & Postcards
Our
collection of vintage Raquette Lake photos and postcards is growing,
and has been reorganized following the landings made by the Raquette Lake Transportation Company
steamer that traveled up and down the lake beginning in 1879.
It is a work in progress!

Weddings
In
December John's second daughter, Naomi, was married to Jim in a
beautiful ceremony. Including the bride, all five of John's children were in the
wedding party, as well as three of his five grandchildren.
Dorian brought the youngest two up from Florida for the celebration.
John sang the Ave Maria during the service. And Jim's
mother brought along her female barbershop quartet, "Finishing
Touches," who performed a splendid rendition of the Lord's Prayer.
Sandy, the bride's mother, organized the
entire event, including a sit-down dinner for 200 and brunch at her
home the next day. (Overheard at the reception, "Well, you know
with Sandy in charge, everything was going to be perfect!")
Jean was unable to attend due to the
cold weather, but the following day the entire wedding party in all
their finery visited her at the nursing home - a wonderful treat.

Megan
and Brock were married in a gorgeous outdoor ceremony at Aunt Sandy's home on Palm Sunday, in the
midst of the annual Easter Egg Hunt with all the grandchildren!
The
Rev. Nancy Rosenblum officiated, Megan's daughter Savanna was the
flower girl, the weather cooperated and Andy gave away his eldest of five daughters.

Lea's Year in China
Andy's youngest daughter, Lea, spent the
past year in Shijiazhuang, China, teaching English to students at the
Hui Hua College of Hebei Normal University. She has visited several
families in their homes, toured Beijing and Tibet and says her
students are the nicest gentlest people she has ever known.
Paul, Andy and Zach visited for 10 days
in March; Sandy and her grandson Ryan spent two weeks in Shijiazhuang
in April.
