The
Church of the Good Shepherd is available for weddings from July through
September. The 1880 summer chapel has been the scene of many beautiful
ceremonies
during the past century.
The
first recorded event was the 1920s wedding of William Brown-Serman's
daughter, Muriel, and the Rev. Asygell Carrington. All the women
wore gorgeous chiffon afternoon dresses. The flowers for the
ceremony were sent direct from New York City to the Raquette Lake Station
in a refrigerated railway car.
Another couple in the 1970s
arranged for the bridal party in full array to arrive by Bird's Seaplane, much to the
delight of the assembled guests!
Please be aware that the
ground is rough terrain, as found in much of the Adirondacks. The
island is not handicapped accessible.
You would be responsible for
all arrangements:
1. providing your own
priest, minister or rabbi
2. renting a pontoon
boat for transportation
3. decorating the
church
There is no electricity in
the church and candles may not be lit. We can run a heavy duty extension
cord over from the Guest Cottage. There is one bathroom in the
Rectory, and one in the Guest Cottage if it is not rented out at the time.
There is a pump organ in
good working condition. It is in tune with itself, but not at
concert pitch.
There is no hall for a
reception. Other wedding parties have used the rectory porch, set up tables out-of-doors and
used the Gazebo at the east end of the Island.
There is NO SMOKING
permitted on the Island.
Donations are accepted for
the use of the church.
