Dear Friends of the Church of the Good Shepherd,

Greetings! As you know, St. Hubert’s Isle has a long history dating back to 1880 when William West Durant constructed the Episcopal church on the island, and when the Central Adirondacks was a favorite haunt of wealthy Americans. In the 1960s, Rev. Carmichael made repairs to the old church and revived public worship services. Services have continued annually for 50 years.

While family members provide regular maintenance and repair to these old buildings, there are occasional projects that require outside assistance. Presently, the church roof is in serious need of repair. Experts have determined that the current roof will not last through another winter. Rain water is already leaking through with some minor damage to the interior.

The Carmichael family plans to cover the building with a new roof using local contractors. The estimated cost for labor and materials is $10,000, and we hope to raise at least half of this amount through this fund raiser. The new roof is expected to last 50-100 years!

We have raised $1,000 to date and hope to raise the remainder by summer’s end. While we realize the current economic crisis certainly may restrict people’s usual habits of giving, any contribution, no matter the amount, will be gratefully acknowledged.

Our annual vespers service took place at the Church of the Good Shepherd on Sunday, August 2nd. Despite the relentless rain, we filled several pews with hardy souls, some arriving by personal boat and others transported from Raquette Lake Village, courtesy of Burke’s Marina.

Thank you again for your interest in the Church of the Good Shepherd, and for past contributions and assistance. We hope you will plan a visit in the near future to Raquette Lake.
