Hamilton
County in upstate New York is the least populated county not only in
New York but in the entire eastern United States. The permanent
population was only 5,054 as of 2007, although that increases to
about 25,000 with the influx of
seasonal visitors.
In
2007-2008, out of 439 school age children, 200 or 46% participated in the School
Breakfast Program. Annual average personal income was just under $31,000.
Along with
the increase in the summer population come many seasonal jobs, but most
employment provides
no benefits and no retirement plan.
Although
we only have one service a year, Good Shepherd as a consecrated church attempts to make an
annual donation of $300 to the Raquette Lake
Volunteer Fire Department as a commitment to
community outreach.
Other worthy organizations
include the Raquette Lake Library and the Community Action Agency of
Hamilton County.
