Hamilton
County in upstate New York is the least populated county not only in
New York but in the entire eastern United States. The permanent
population was only 4,923 as of 2009, although that increases to
about 25,000 with the influx of
seasonal visitors.
In
2007-2008, out of 439 school age children, 200 or 46% participated in the School
Breakfast Program. Annual average personal income in 2009 was $36,238.
Along with
the increase in the summer population come many seasonal jobs, but most
employment provides
no benefits and no retirement plan.
Worthy organizations
for donations include the Raquette Lake Volunteer Fire Department, the Raquette Lake Library and the Community Action Agency of
Hamilton County.
